授業概要

In this course, you will learn the basic concepts and ideas of anthropology.  Anthropology involves the systematic, comparative study of groups of people from all over the world and the knowledge those groups have that defines their cultures. We will draw on what we learn about other cultures to learn something about our own culture(s) and about ourselves.

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the perspectives, methods, and findings that anthropology.  Anthropology involves the systematic, comparative study of groups of people from all over the world and the knowledge those groups have that defines their cultures. We will draw on what we learn about other cultures to learn something about our own culture(s) and about ourselves.

1. General-propose competence: communicative ability, critical and creative thinking skills, broad perspective and internationalism, collaborative, independent & autonomous skills.
2. Special competence: understanding international relations, analytical skills on international relations, ability of logical expression on international relations.

授業の到達目標(学修成果)

This course intends to assist students in developing competency to:
1. explain how anthropologists study and talk about political, economic, legal, and social systems;
2. apply the concept of culture to analyze cross-cultural issues in Japan and the world;
3. identify cross-cultural differences and similarities in societies;
4. examine his/her own life and culture in a more critical manner in relation to the lives of people in other cultures.

There are no prerequisites to enroll in this course.

成績評価方法

Evaluation will be based on attendance, participation, and writing assignments, and reading responses.  Grading will be as follows:

Attendance and Participation  20%
Quizzes (6 quizzes)    20%
Paper 1            20%
Paper 2      20%
Reading responses    20% (2x10%)
